WHAT YOU SHOULD BELIEVE – It is especially important when considering performance testing that you trust only facts. There are more and more water ionizer “comparisons” showing up on the Internet lately; how can you know which to believe? The following criteria will help you distinguish what is truly factual from that which appears to be, but in reality is not. (Click this link to understand pH and ORP)
QUESTIONS TO ASK TO DETERMINE A GOOD TEST
* Is the Test Independent, Third Party? You will want to know the party performing the test has no motivation for a specific outcome. Ideally a test would be performed by a company with absolutely no business ties to any brand. There are tests on the Internet that appear to be objective but in reality are not. In a few short minutes of internet searching, we found an interesting website depicting the ties of one comparison site to a specific brand. A good litmus test to apply is does the entity performing the test make income from the sale of water ionizers? Can you verify this?
* Is the Test Scientific? Look for good solid scientific testing using:
o Top quality instruments. Measuring pH is relatively common (example: pool and fish tank maintenance) and the equipment to do it is fairly accurate and readily available. Measuring ORP is another story entirely. ORP is expressed in millivolts (1/1000 of a single volt) and measures extremely slight, and highly variable differences in the electrical properties of water. Instruments that measure ORP range in price from $100 for a handheld “tester” to over $3,000 for more sophisticated laboratory equipment. Look for the more sophisticated and expensive laboratory equipment.

* Are the Results Certified? You want to see results certified by a credible authority, which will stand behind the fact that it is an Independent Third Party that has employed proper scientific protocols. The litmus test here is easy: would the certifying party have anything to lose if they were caught falsifying certified results? An analytical lab with an EPA certification on the line would be a good bet to provide facts that are verifiable and trustworthy. A guy standing in a kitchen would not.
HOW TO SPOT A QUESTIONABLE TEST
A few simple questions make this easy. You should ask:
* Who is making the rating or video?
* Who actually performed the tests?
* Is the person testing (and standing behind the results) credible? Can they be believed?
* Would they have any motivation to skew the results?
* Are they up-front about who they are and why exactly they are rating ionizers?
* Can you see the setting level selected of each ionizer in each test?
* Can you see the flow rate of each ionizer or the flow rates all running at the same time?
* Are the results of the top brands similar or is there an unrealistic variance?

Understanding the importance of different cleaning systems and the cleaning cycle:
Not all cleaning systems are created equal. Actually some cleaning systems are far superior and will dramatically increase the life of the ionizer as well as provide easier and more enjoyable daily use of the unit.
You are considering purchasing an alkaline water ionizer to enjoy the many benefits that result from the transformation of water through ionization. It's a fact that an ionizer’s ability to create this alteration can suffer over time from mineral scaling on the electrodes.
Here’s what happens in the process: Water has naturally occurring minerals. These minerals will build up on the electrodes over time. (The electrode is the piece of equipment in your ionizer that transforms the water.) Mineral build up, or scaling “coats” the surface of the electrode, if your cleaning system is not effective – decreasing its ability to transform the water. The compromised electrode doesn’t efficiently transform the water, robbing you of the benefits.
Ionizers all have cleaning systems, but they are all different. Understanding what type of cleaning cycle the unit you are purchasing has is crucial to making an informed purchase. It will determine your ionizer’s performance over time. Understanding the differences is easy.
The type of cleaning cycle also has a marked impact on the convenience in using a particular ionizer.
Understanding the Cleaning Cycle
As we stated, all ionizers have a cleaning system. Most certainly all ionizer cleaning systems are not created equal. In the last page we helped you understand in basic terms why cleaning is important. Now in easy terms we will teach you how cleaning systems vary. Then you will be able to make an informed decision and select an ionizer that will perform year in and year out.
The electrical current delivered to the electrodes inside your ionizer is what transforms your water. The cleaning system in an ionizer is designed primarily to clean the electrodes and is based on a concept called “reverse polarity”. This concept relies on the polarity of the electrical charge applied to the electrodes. Each electrode has either a positive or negative polarity. Reverse polarity simply switches the charge applied to the electrode.
There are two parts to reverse polarity cleaning:
1. A reversal of the polarity on the electrodes which repels anything that is sticking there.
2. A washing or “bathing” of the electrodes in acidic water – the only effective way to clean scale
There are significant differences that determine how effective the cleaning cycle really is. One key difference is how much time the cleaning cycle runs in comparison to how much time the ionizer runs making alkaline water - the “acidic to alkaline cleaning ratio”. Therefore it is crucial that your ionizer has a good acidic to alkaline cleaning ratio. The more acidic is run to bath the electrodes the better. This is not unlike putting in extra “elbow grease” to clean a tough spot – a brief once over will often not do the job effectively.
The way an ionizer is “programmed” to clean is crucial in determining the cleaning ratio and the convenience factor.
The most rudimentary are the units with Manual Cleaning, where the user has to initiate cleaning.
Pre-cleaning ionizers clean each time you start water flow (you must either wait or override the cycle).
Timer based cleaning systems operate on a timer system that initiates cleaning on an interval such as every 12 hours. After the preset interval, the next time you operate the unit, you have to wait for a cleaning cycle.
Volume based systems trigger cleaning after a set volume of water passes through the ionizer. Like the timer systems, once you achieve the preset volume, the next time you operate the unit, you have to wait for a cleaning cycle.
Each of the preceding have their draw backs: you can forget to trigger a manual cycle, you have to wait or override a pre-use cycle, the timer based systems and in fact all these systems have poor acidic to alkaline cleaning ratios (or not enough elbow grease). The final drawback is that with each of the above systems you have to wait for the cycle to complete before you can receive alkaline drinking water.
Better yet are the units with an Automatic Post-use Self Cleaning mechanism . This means it cleans automatically in the background after each and every use. It also provides a better acidic to alkaline cleaning ratio than other reverse polarity ionizers. Additionally, if it has a motor to reverse flow, then you never have to wait to get your alkaline water.
